A guide to Ipanema

What sits within walking distance of a leafy street between the lagoon and the beach: where to put your towel, where to eat, how to get around, and which trips are worth leaving the neighbourhood for.

A narrow neighbourhood — and that is the point

Ipanema fits between the beach and Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, and you can walk from one body of water to the other in minutes. That is what makes it work without a car: market, pharmacy, bakery, metro and sand all sit in the same short radius.

Rua Almirante Saddock de Sá, where Flat Maré Boa is, is one of the leafy residential streets in that middle strip — quiet at night, with the beach on one side and the lagoon on the other.

The beach, post by post

Ipanema beach is organised by lifeguard posts, and each stretch draws its own crowd. Posto 9 is the busiest and youngest; the neighbouring posts are calmer and more family-minded. It is worth walking until you find yours.

At the far end is Arpoador, with the rock people climb to watch the sunset — and the collective applause when the sun drops behind Morro Dois Irmãos. Mornings are best for swimming and walking an empty beach; late afternoon is the show.

Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas

On the other side of the neighbourhood, the lagoon has a flat, continuous 7.5 km loop for walking, running or cycling, with kiosks dotted around the shore.

It is probably the best place in Rio for outdoor exercise: you circle it with Christ the Redeemer on one side and the mountains on the other. In summer, early morning and late afternoon are the civilised hours.

Getting around (and why you will not need a car)

The metro serves the neighbourhood at General Osório, on Praça General Osório, served by lines 1 and 4, and at Nossa Senhora da Paz. From there you reach Copacabana, Botafogo and the city centre without touching traffic.

Rua Visconde de Pirajá is Ipanema's commercial spine — supermarkets, pharmacies, bookshops and everyday stores. Garcia D'Ávila is where the designer names cluster. On Sundays, the Hippie Fair fills Praça General Osório with crafts, art and food.

If you do drive in, the problem in Ipanema is not driving: it is parking. Covered parking in a building is rare here — and it is exactly what the flat has, free for guests.

Eating and drinking

Ipanema is one of Rio's best neighbourhoods to eat in, and the range is the point: from a bakery counter to a long dinner, all within a few blocks.

Among the historic addresses is Garota de Ipanema, on Rua Vinícius de Moraes, where the song was written. For everyday life, the neighbourhood botecos handle cold beer and small plates without ceremony, and the bakeries handle breakfast.

Trips worth leaving the neighbourhood for

Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado and Sugarloaf in Urca are the two obvious postcards — and they still earn the trip. Vista Chinesa offers the same city from a far quieter lookout.

Nearby, the Botanical Garden and Parque Lage deliver dense greenery minutes from the asphalt. All of them are a short ride from Ipanema.

Arriving from the airports

Santos Dumont (SDU) is the closer one: roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Galeão (GIG), the international airport, usually takes 40 to 60 minutes.

From either, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the simplest way to the door. Reception at Flat Maré Boa is staffed 24 hours, so a red-eye arrival is not a problem.
